This artery is located at the base of the skull, leading to the brain from the top of the cervical spine area. Chiropractic spine manipulation subjects this area to sudden and vigorous twisting motions, sometimes causing the vertebral artery to stretch to the point of tearing.
Lacerations in the vertebral artery can lead to a fatal stroke in the brain or brainstem. While it is possible to survive a brain or brainstem stroke, it often leads to permanently disabling injuries, including paralysis and lasting impairment to one’s balance, vision, hearing, and speech.
