Personal Experience with Injury & Recovery

I, Attorney Rob Kornfeld, would like to share with you the reason I am so committed to fighting for the rights of injured folks just like you. During my 40+ years in practice, I’ve had great success for my clients, whether they were hurt on the job, in a motor vehicle or injured because of medical malpractice. I also have handled cases involving brain injuries, paralysis, burn and chemical exposure injuries caused in the workplace, employment harassment, and discrimination claims.

The Moment My Life Changed Forever

Just a few years into practicing law, my life underwent a permanent change. I was a young attorney, husband, and soon-to-be a first-time father, living and working in Kirkland. I was driving my car back home from work on Lake City Way in July 1985, when it happened, that life-changing moment, a moment I still can’t remember because of the head injury I suffered and the injury to my right knee that ultimately led to 5 knee surgeries.

I woke up in the hospital, in pain and disoriented from my head injury – I had no idea what had happened. The police told my family that a truck driving in the oncoming lane had rear-ended a car, forcing it into my lane where it hit my vehicle head-on.

I was lucky to have survived the collision. This was before airbags. I didn’t know it at the time, but I was about to begin a long journey of recovery over 8 years and a recovery that turned into a lifetime of permanent injuries to my knee from my traumatic injury.

The Difficult Road to Recovery

During the long months I spent recuperating, I thought a lot about my life – past, present, and future. Something I read in college came back to me – Keats said, “Nothing ever becomes real until it is experienced.” This explains why I fight so hard for my clients. I have been where you are. I have been hurt – badly, and through no fault of my own – and know how frustrating it can be. I remember wondering, “why me?”

You may be feeling anger at the person who hurt you, physical pain from your injuries and mental anguish as you worry if you’ll recover physically, financially and emotionally. Shock is also common. You may be in disbelief that something so traumatic has happened to you, and struggling to understand why. I understand because I experienced all these emotions, and more.

The Wounds that Heal & Those that Last

Over the next several years, I had ten very difficult surgeries to try to restore what was broken. Some of the wounds healed, and cuts and scrapes were managed with sutures, even though they left scars. I recovered fully from the mild traumatic brain injury I received in the accident, though many of the other physical injuries left permanent and life-altering scars that required scar revision surgeries. I was lucky to survive, but not without paying a price.

I lost a kneecap, and with that, my ability to participate in many recreational activities I had once been so passionate about in the past. After the injury, I as no longer able to run again and I had to learn to accept my physical limitations. As for the activities I could still do, some were very challenging, and I could no longer reach the same level of performance that was once so easy.

For a long time, even a walk around the block was painful. Although I’m able to be more active now, I will never be fully restored to the physical health I enjoyed prior to my accident. A week in the hospital, multiple surgeries, physical therapy, and other rehabilitation cost me time with my wife that I will never get back.

The Life I Would Have Had

When you’ve been injured, permanently, your life will never be the same. Whatever plans you made may have to be changed depending on the long-term effects of your accident. I have a good life. I’ve been practicing law for more than 40 years, have a great family, kids and friends. Yes, I too have hobbies and interests, and I make time to support my community.

However, this is not the life I would have had if that truck driver hadn’t made such a grave mistake. Had that trucker not been so careless, the driver’s negligence would not have sent a “tank” (an old 1968 Pontiac Bonneville station wagon) careening across a center turn lane into my oncoming lane of travel causing a head-on impact to the front of my car. Coping with your new reality and considering how your life will change after a serious injury is a challenge – one that I understand completely. You can certainly still have a fulfilling life – but you should also be compensated for the life you should have but lost. As a personal injury lawyer, I will fight for you and how the long-term effects of your injury will alter your life.
