Should You Handle Your Own Case?

Many people naturally prefer not to hire an attorney unless one is really necessary.  While this is a commendable stance to take, it is not always in your best interest.  Common sense will tell you that the insurance company is not looking out for you. Insurance companies are concerned about paying you as little as possible in order to maximize their profits.  An attorney can help you evaluate whether you are being treated fairly.  A good personal injury lawyer will assist to maximize the amount of your recovery.

Hiring an attorney who has the skill, knowledge and experience, both in trials and settlements, will help you protect your interests and insure the recovery which you deserve.  In July of 1985, I too was seriously injured after a car accident.

I underwent five knee and four other surgeries. I also suffered a minor head injury, from which, thankfully, I made a full recovery. Having been through this, I can share with you the importance of having a lawyer.

Even though my practice is devoted to helping injured people, I decided to hire a friend to represent me on my personal injury case.  Although my law practice is limited to personal injury law, I knew it would not be in my best interest to handle my own case.  This is an emotional process, one in which an injured person cannot really be objective.  Although I realized I would have to pay a standard contingency fee to hire a lawyer, this was well advised.  If a doctor does not operate on himself why should a lawyer represent himself?  Despite this, my expertise as a personal injury lawyer, I too declined to represent myself.

This is the same advice that I impart to you, not to try to represent yourself, but to secure legal representation.
